“The Mission” a movie that came out in 1986, is the story of the Jesuit “reductions” (missions) among the Guarani lands of South America. The colonial powers, Spain and Portugal, are disputing over the rights to the lands and the tribe. The Jesuits struggle to protect the tribe, one Jesuit (Robert DeNiro) believes the only path is one of armed resistance, the other Jesuit (Jeremy Irons) sees the only path as one of spiritual warfare. The final scene of the movie sums up the options and is dominated by a Eucharistic Procession. Be forewarned that the scene has graphic violence, but such is the reality of fighting evil in the world.
