This paten (above) - the precious metal plate made for the sanctified bread of the Eucharist - was made in Syria between 565 and 578 AD during the reign of the emperor Justin II (image below). The names of the donors, John and Theodosios, are inscribed around the circumference of the plate, along with a wish for the eternal welfare of their children. The inscription reads:
“For the repose of Sergia, daughter of John and Theodosios, and for the salvation of Megas and Nonnas and their children.”
